Spinal Decompression

Spinal Decompression... what is it?

Spinal decompression therapy is an innovative, non-invasive treatment that incorporates a revolutionary approach to traction to address common musculoskeletal disorders such as back, pelvis, hip, knee, neck, and shoulder pain. It is primarily used to treat disc-type injuries or disorders in the neck and in the low back.

Dr. Chuck has Certification in the Kennedy Decompression Technique. He is the only Chiropractor in Denton who has this specialized training. The Kennedy Decompression Technique has developed quick and simple methods to assess whether spinal decompression is right for you.

Spinal decompression has helped thousands and could help you as well. Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical answer for disc related syndromes of your lumbar or cervical spine. Spinal decompression therapy treatments utilize FDA certified equipment. It uses an alternating, or intermittent pull pattern programmed into the spinal decompression computer that facilitates this process.

These pull-relax patterns create a suctioning effect on the disc much like pulling a balloon from both ends, and the middle portion narrows as a result. The goal of spinal decompression therapy is to reduce the pressure on the nerve, most commonly from a herniated or protruding disc.

Spinal decompression therapy also decreases muscle spasms, muscle guarding, and breaks up adhesions which facilitates increased range of motion and decreased pain. Spinal decompression also helps improve blood flow and nutrient exchange at the disc which results in decreased pain, improved healing, and slower degeneration.

Spinal decompression therapy is a comfortable and safe therapy! The force gradually increases over several minutes to a peak force that separates the vertebra and gently stretches the attached soft tissue. The patient’s pain level and body weight determine the settings. You experience several cycles of stretch and relaxation during spinal decompression therapy. Sessions are typically less than 15 minutes and many individuals benefit greatly within the first few treatments.

Spinal decompression therapy is the leading alternative to surgery. It is the pain free solution that has shown a very high rate of success reducing or even eliminating back or neck pain. If you are in pain, you owe it to yourself to look into the spinal decompression therapy today and see how it may benefit you. Remember, conservative care before surgical care! Typical treatment plan durations varies between 8-20 visits to resolve low back or neck pain.

How do I know if I am a candidate for spinal decompression therapy?

Rather than placing all patients with back or neck pain on the spinal decompression machine, it is best to determine which patients are most likely to benefit. Please understand spinal decompression is beneficial to most because of its action on the discs of the spine; however, clinically it is not indicated for every patient.

Why is patient position so important?

Proper patient position is essential to achieve desired treatment goals. Improper positioning can aggravate the patient’s symptoms. The Kennedy Decompression Technique certification teaches a simple screening to determine exact patient position so patients are screened and placed in the most therapeutic position to achieve the best response.

What conditions are best treated with spinal decompression?

Spinal decompression is effective at treating muscle spasms, bulging discs, herniated discs, pinched nerves, sciatica, radiating arm pain, headaches, and facet syndrome.

What will I feel?

For your low back, you will be lying comfortably either face up (on your back) or face down (on your stomach) depending on which position is best tolerated and most therapeutic for your particular condition. Straps are then snugly wrapped around your waist and another set around your lower ribs to hold you firmly and achieve maximum traction.

For your neck, you will be lying comfortably on your back with a pair of pads positioned at the base of your skull and the top of your neck. These pads allow the traction process to be gentle and comfortable.

The computerized system will go through a pull-hold-release-hold pattern each time increasing the pull strength until your desired tension is reached. The pattern and desired tension is chosen based on your condition. Treatment times vary from about 10-15 minutes.

How does spinal decompression work?

The tractioning pull-hold-relax-hold action described above does a some amazing things:

1. Facilitates muscle relaxation which increases range of motion.
2. Creates a suctioning effect using negative pressure within the disc that helps suck the bulges or herniations back inside. This takes the pressure off the nerve root, and the symptoms typically diminish.
3. Helps with fluid exchange at the disc. The disc is dependent on motion to pump the bad toxins out and bring the good nutrients in. This is how spinal decompression works to slow disc degeneration.

How long does it take?

Typically, most patients show improvement within 4-6 treatments with total resolution between 8-20 treatments. However, this can change depending on the history of the injury, your age and your general overall health. The longer you maintain your alignment from treatment, the less spinal decompression treatments will be required.

Can I just do spinal decompression therapy?

This is not recommended because ideally the underlying causes need to be addressed at the same time. If the disc, for example, is the issue at hand, then the most important issue is why did you develop herniated discs? Utilizing applied kinesiology and chiropractic will greatly help resolve the root cause of your health concern.
